BOCCE VICTORIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016 – SHEPPARTON
Local NEBA Bocce Ladies clean sweep the State Championships
The BOCCE VICTORIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016was hosted in the Greater Shepparton region during the ANZAC day weekend. It was the first time the event was hosted outside Metro Melbourne.Players qualifiedfrom many of Metro Melbourne clubs as well as from Regional Victoria clubs such as Morwell, Tatura, Kyabram, Cobram and Shepparton. Host clubs were the Tatura Italian Social Club and the Shepparton Italian Social Club.
The Championship was officially opened on the Saturday 23rd April as players were welcomed to the Tatura club with a fabulous reception BBQ luncheon. North East Bocce Association (NEBA) President Joe Greco, Tatura Bocce Club President Mario Borrelli, Shepparton Club President Charlie Caruso and Bocce Victoria President, Frank Funari welcomed the players for 2 days of fabulous bocce competition.
The competition started off at a cracking pace as players in the Men’s State League, Women’s League and Men’s A Grade competed on the courts to win the points and games to qualify to the finals which were played in Shepparton. Spectators from local & afar came to see the best of the best Victorian Bocce players as they competed on the courts of Tatura & Shepparton. The highlights during the Championship games included the consistent and accurate pointing in the Ladies section by local International player Mary Greco (Kyabram Club) and in the Men’s section they came to see and were not disappointed to witness the precision throwing by Australian and World medal winner Dino Mikolic (LMC Reservoir Club), local & international Player Tony Borrelli (Tatura Club), and BFV Doubles pair from Sunshine Club Angelo Parisi, and Tony Palermo.
In the A Grade it was R.Manzo from (FA Keysborough Club) that out played the rest winning the Singles State title from P.Manca (CDA Epping Club) and then went on to win in the Doubles with team mate S.Cotroneo to clinch the Doubles State Title from D.Vellucci & M.Coviello (LMC Reservoir Club).
In the Women’s Division for both the Singles & Doubles Finals the players were both all locals from Greater Shepparton. In the Singles, Mary Greco was in top form as she smashed Morwell 13 to 2 points and then beat the Vic Metro State doubles representative team 8 points to 4. The Women’s Singles final was an all Local players with Mary Greco (Kyabram Club) winning 13 to 4 Angelina Borrelli (Tatura Club)
The Men’s State League division was the showcase as Top National & International players played out the Singles and Doubles to qualify to the Finals. In the Singles the favourites were outclassed by Rocco Paladino (CDA Epping Club) as he beat State Champion Jim Coviello 13 to 2 points and then went on to narrowly beat inform player by one point Angelo Parisi 7points & R.Paladino 8 points. The final was set for a fairy-tale finish but it did not realise as the inform Dino Mikolic smashed every precision bowl bowled by Rocco with Dino going on to win the State Singles Title with a winning score of 13points to 1 point.
The Doubles was a cake walk for the Doubles pair of Angelo Parisi and Tony Palermo which did not drop one game in the lead up to the final and only conceding 10 points in the 4 qualifying games. Hot favourites Jim Coviello & Lino Mosca were out of touch and managed only 2 wins, likewise Dino Mikolic & Gino Monturo, while local team Tony Borrelli & G.Ferlauto qualified to the final with 4 convincing wins. The final was one that players and spectators dream about! Local team T.Borrelli/G.Ferlauto tried everything but were outclassed by the precision bowling & throwing by the Sunshine Club pair. The final was all one way traffic as the pair of Parisi/Palermo continued on their way of winning the ends. One lapse in concentration with 3 bad bowls by Palermo & a critical miss by Parisi opened the door for the Tatura pair as they managed to win some points and put a score on the board. A subsequent good end gave the Tatura boys 5 points with Parisi/Palermo stuck on 11points. The final end was close as each team took the point. Precision bowling & throwing by both teams saw the advantage end change over 3 times. With 2 bowls left and point in favour of Paris/Palermo, Angelo went for the opposition bowl to make 2 points so as to win the game. The bowl was precise but narrowly nudge the jack & instead of the 2 points they remained on 1 point with needing another point to win & only one bowl left in the rack. After a quick team decision Angelo marked the opposition’s Bowl & threw hitting the nominated opposition bowl, winning the end by 2 points & the Doubles State titles.
