Raffa Open 2017 Results

 MORWELL POWER

Morwell team of Franco Fava, Diane Penney & Nick Penney too powerful !

This two-day Bocce Raffa extravaganza supported by lead sponsor Latrobe City, played over the weekend, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th January brought the best of the best Bocce-Raffa players to Morwell for the 10th Australian Bocce Raffa Open, with 12 teams participating in the mixed triples event.  Teams were from NSW, Regional Victoria (Morwell Club and Kyabram Club) and Melbourne Metro. The game is similar to Bocce Bowls, but the bowls are of plastic material and the player can bowl or throw to knock the opponent’s bowls away and make a point close to the jack, or with a low toss bounce the bowl to displace the opponents bowl.

The Triples teams, each of two men and a woman player competed for the $3000 prize pool and the opportunity to represent Australia at the next World Championships.

The popularity of the event necessitated the host club, the Italian Australian Club in Morwell, Victoria, to prepare all 6 courts to ensure that the RAFFA OPEN was completed within the programmed two days.

Raymond Cher the President of the Bocce Federation of Australia congratulated the players and officials on participating in the weekend’s Bocce Raffa Open along with Latrobe City Mayor Cr Kellie O’Callaghan who was joined by Club General Manager Cassandra Rendell, welcomed the players and officials to the club.

The Morwell Bocce Club, situated in the heart of the power producing region of Victoria, put its bocce courts at the disposal of the Bocce Federation of Australia for this event. Frank Fava and his bocce club volunteers did a fantastic construction of the Raffa Bowls courts which were in pristine condition for the championship.

The Championship was a great success for the players and the many Bocce spectators, especially those that enjoyed a holiday as well as watching or playing bocce. The success of this Championship was due to the vision of Bocce Australia in expanding the Raffa Bowl game, the sponsorship from LaTrobe City Council, the Morwell Italo-Australian Club and their dedicated Bocce subcommittee volunteers, led by Sally Fava.

Overall, the tournament turned out to be a battle between the Victorian teams and the teams from NSW. All games were of a high standard with the highlight games this year being the quarter finals where the competitive intensity took a step higher and had the spectators on their toes as the teams from Morwell and Melbourne competed against the NSW teams.

Of the 12 teams, the following teams qualified to the quarter finals, Rocco Mancini, Silvio Bruzzese & Santa Bruzzese (NSW), Giuseppe Rozzo, Nella Chiandotto & Valerio Chiandotto ( Marconi Club); Gino Montuoro, Marcella Giacomin & Antonia Coviello (Lazio Marche Club,Melb), Nick Albanese, Anna Prezioso & Felice Prezioso (Morwell) ; Franco Fava, Diane Penney & Nick Penney(Morwell); Ennio Alfonsi, Chu K.Lam (Charlie) & Maria Maselli ( LCC, NSW); Joe Maselli, Chris Finocchiaro & Frank Finocchiaro (Morwell); v Joe Greco, Mary Greco & Peter Russo (NEBA, Vic)

In the Round Robin (Pool A) section of the Championship, from the first game it was obvious that the team of Rocco Mancini, Silvio Bruzzese and Santa Bruzzese were on fire and only dropped one game in the Round Robin section to local Morwell team of Joe Maselli, Chris Finocchiaro & Frank Finocchiaro. While in Pool B the Marconi team of Giuseppe Rozzo, Nella & Valerio Chiandotto were in good form, blitzing the field winning all games & topping the pool. Local hot favorite team of Franco Fava, Diane Penney & Nick Penney(Morwell) were in good form coming second in Pool B only to be beaten by Frank’s brother, Jim Fava, Maria Fava & Vince Luddeni (Morwell) with a score of 12pts to 10pts.

The surprise team this year was the NSW team from   LCC, NSW with first time players Ennio Alfonsi, and Chu K.Lam (Charlie). They were supported by experienced player Maria Maselli from Morwell helping out to make up the 3rd team member. They played superbly to qualify to the quarter finals only to be narrowly beating by 2points by the hot favorites and 2016 Champions from Liverpool, NSW   of Rocco Mancini, Silvio Bruzzese & Santa Bruzzese.

The Semi-finals had one team from Morwell, of Franco Fava, Diane Penney & Nick Penney(Morwell) and one team from Melbourne Gino Montuoro, Marcella Giacomin & Antonia Coviello (Lazio Marche Club, Reservoir) and two teams from NSW – one team from the Liverpool - Silvio. Bruzzese, Ms. Sandra Bruzzese & Rocco Mancini and two from the Sydney, Marconi club - Giuseppe Rozzo, Nella & Valerio Chiandotto.

This year the hot favorites were knocked out in the   semifinals, resulting in an all Victorian Final between Morwell and Lazio-Marche Club, Melbourne.   These two Bocce Raffa power teams hit the courts, determined to get an early lead and it was the Morwell team of Franco Fava, Diane Penney & Nick Penney that did best as they were more focused and jumped out to a quick lead. They maintained it throughout each end as they notched up point after point to totally demolish the opposing team, conceding only 1 point. Final score Morwell team of Franco Fava, Diane Penney & Nick Penney with a score of 12 points to 1 point beat the Lazio-Marche Club, Melbourne team of Gino Montuoro, Marcella Giacomin & Antonia Coviello, winning the game, the title of Australian Raffa Open Champion team for 2017 and the prize monies.

Dear Members of Bocce Australia, Friends and Supporters

On behalf of everyone at Bocce Australia, I’d like to thank you for your support this year. Whether you volunteered, sponsored or participated or officiated or coached at one of our championships, workshops or other events - all your efforts have contributed to the awareness and ongoing success of the sport of bocce in Australia.

This year, you may have experienced the contest at the National Bocce Raffa Open or the international flavour of the inaugural Asia-Oceania Junior Championship and who can forget the rivalry exhibited in Shepparton of Victorian competitors fighting for a place to represent their State at the Nationals. You may have witnessed the clash of the state titans at the National Championships at the Liverpool Catholic Club - voted a winner by all involved!  While the struggle on the courts at the Morwell Classic is intense on court, the loyal contenders claim it’s friendship that keeps them coming back.

Let’s not forget the many State and National bocce competitions sponsored by generous donors and clubs at our many affiliated clubs in metropolitan and regional areas including - My Chemist challenge and many others at the Casa D’Abruzzo, Marconi Cup, Cooma Cup, the many sponsored events at the Campania and other SA Clubs. The Victoria vs.Tasmania battle or the many contests held in WA and across Queensland ensures that bocce competitions at all levels of ability, including our Special Olympics and Paralympics continues to thrive.  Bocce also enjoyed some relaxed moments with involvement at food and wine festivals, carnivals and in trendy bars and pubs around Australia.

The enthusiasm and eagerness of youngsters participating in bocce holiday programs and school competitions and activities at our Clubs augurs well for the future of the sport.  2016 ended on a high for juniors, with the participation of Australia at the World Juniors and Under 23 Bocce Championships in Monaco, congratulations to Ivan Pepe, Nicole and Daniel Samsa and coach, George Milic for their fantastic efforts!

2016 saw Australia receive approval for its nomination of three international referees - congratulations Vanessa Allegretto-Birri, Anthony DeLeonardis and Joseph Maselli.

Congratulations are also in order to Bocce SA Inc., celebrating 40 years of bocce competitions, accomplishments and major events, including staging the first Women’s National Australian Championships!

Victoria earned its reputation for the innovation state with the launch of Beach Bocce on Victorian beaches and the ushering in of the Bocce Smash trials!

There's much to look forward to in 2017. Firstly there’s the continued endeavour to lobby the IOC to have bocce accepted as an Olympic sport and then there is the excitement of World Championships including,

  • Senior Men’s competition in Morocco,
  • Juniors in Tunisia or France
  • The possibility of a Raffa World Championship in South Africa, Algeria or Brazil,
  • International competition in Monaco;
  • International competition in Italy Italy;
  • And opportunities for competition in China;

Events on the Australian calendar will host, first off the rank-

  • The National Raffa Open in Morwell Victoria;
  • The Asia-Oceania Invitational Juniors and Under 23 at the Casa D’Abruzzo, Melbourne;
  • The National Seniors in Perth at the Tuscany Club;
  • The Masters Games in Tasmania with the traditional game and embracing Beach Bocce;
  • The Veneto Club, Melbourne is celebrating 50 years of bocce in 2017, hopefully with a special bocce event!

My Bocce Australia colleagues Frank Funari and Tony Biancacci would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our State Federations with the tremendous support of our Club network.  To you and to all those who have worked and served the sport of bocce this year, we say thank you!

Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy festive season and a prosperous New Year! We look forward to seeing you at a bocce activity again soon.
